My Life as a Freelance Goalkeeper Coach/Obsession (63)

by
Didn’t ever think i would say this but ive managed to condense my coaching so i now get a extra day off to spend with the family. Thanks to good advice from a couple of people i respect for who they are and for giving there time to help me out i had a good think about what coaching i was doing and how could i condense down without affecting the Gk’s and myself.

One of the people i heard from completely out the blue with a nice email going into detail what he does, his coaching time table etc helped alot. I’m sure we all know as ive already said that its easy to over load yourself with coaching as the passion for it is beyond what some people can imagine.

I’m sure GK coaches are more passionate a coach, obviously im not knocking other coaches in general as we all have to have a passion to do what we do but im sure i don’t speak for myself when i say i really couldn’t get any more passionate about what i do but it has started to bug me about how much im not around my family and that is not what i want and needed to be changed.

Now im happy and found the balance between family, coaching and work to where we are all content. Making sure i got the balance between these was essential to move forward with a clearer mind, over loading can bring everything down and not just coaching so i would like to say to everyone who is in the situation i was take a look at what you are doing, get sound advice as i was lucky enough to have around me and find a balance.

Thank you Bob for always been there to ask anything i want with a brutally honest answer and to Neil Ebbrell for your gratefully received sound advice, two of many coaches who really do give the world of coaching a great name…..

Struggling with similar issues. Can you go into any more detail as perspectives which helped you find your balance. I know it’s different for everyone given their circumstance, but like you, I train goalkeepers and find it at time consuming wrt family time.

    Cheers,
    Matt

Hi Matt, so sorry for the late reply as i find myself a fairly busy man from time to time. I came to realise that although i absolutely love goalkeeping and coaching you will never be happy until you find a balance between the two or three if you also work. I have a full time job,2 kids and a wife, with that i manage to fit in coaching, i could easily be out every night coaching but that wouldn’t be good for my family life and they mean more to me than coaching ever will.
In example a Monday Tuesday and a Thursday i don’t coach at all until i start at Newcastle united women fc in June/July time and then it will be a Tuesday or Thursday then attending a couple of home or away games when i can fit it into my family life. I work for GKicon every two weeks on a Friday as i gave my friend a Friday every two weeks so i wouldn’t be out every Friday night plus my work dictated that a little aswell.
    So in a nutshell mate:
    Monday- work
Tuesday- work then NUFC Women (unless on a Thursday)
    Wednesday- work then coaching
Thursday- work then NUFC Women (unless on a Tuesday)
Friday-work then coaching every two weeks
Saturday- coaching every two weeks on a morning
Sunday-Coaching,one on one session every two weeks on a morning

I will rotate days to suit so im not coaching every weekend morn nor am i out most nights, i used to be out 4 week nights then all weekend coaching and as you can imagine it burned me out and i went from loving it to feeling like it was a chore. It can also affect the sessions you put on as your mind just isn’t focused how it should be.

Plan your week well ahead and don’t over do it, quality is better than quantity. If your happy you will find that your coaching gets easier and more enjoyable. My email address is leebarrass@btinternet.com, drop me a email anytime you want mate, be good to share ideas etc
